During her visits to the venues for the 2024 European Football Championship, Federal Minister of the Interior and Home Affairs Nancy Faeser came to Gelsenkirchen on Friday (26.4.). In the Arena AufSchalke, she discussed various topics relating to the tournament this summer with Mayor Karin Welge and Christina Rühl-Hamers, member of the board of FC Schalke 04.
Faeser, who is also Minister of Sport by virtue of her office, informed herself on site about the current status of preparations for UEFA EURO 2024. The agenda included the plans for the host city of Gelsenkirchen and the stadium as the venue for a total of four EURO matches, as well as various security and mobility issues.
Nancy Faeser: "I am looking forward to this major soccer event in Germany. When we think back to the 2006 World Cup, we all have many wonderful memories of a personal nature. I hope that we can repeat this summer fairytale with EURO 2024. Both the city of Gelsenkirchen and FC Schalke 04 are very well prepared. I will definitely be back to watch one of the matches in the Arena AufSchalke."
"The countdown to EURO 2024 in Gelsenkirchen is on. We are looking forward to interesting matches and enthusiastic fans," says Karin Welge. "As a city, we have been in close contact with all partners since 2019, especially the police and FC Schalke 04 - we are well positioned at all levels. With this good preparatory work and planning that has already been done, we can now simply look forward to it. Especially after our constructive discussion today, no questions remain unanswered. The European Championship can come."
Christina Rühl-Hamers emphasizes that the anticipation for EURO 2024 is growing from day to day: "We are proud that Arena AufSchalke will once again be hosting such a major tournament this year and are looking forward to interesting matches and an eventful festival with fans from different nations."
The Arena AufSchalke will be the venue for three preliminary round matches and one round of 16 match at EURO 2024. Gelsenkirchen can look forward to the matches between Serbia and England (16.6.), Spain and Italy (20.6.), Georgia and Portugal (26.6.) as well as a round of 16 match (30.6.).
