Shakhtar Donetsk start the Champions League with a draw

A point at the start: Shakhtar Donetsk kicked off their 2024/2025 Champions League season on Wednesday evening (18.9.). The team led by head coach Marino Pusic missed a penalty in the match at FC Bologna, but were otherwise wide awake and motivated.

The game began with the first exclamation mark after less than 120 seconds when the Ukrainian champions were awarded a penalty following a foul on Eguinaldo by former Hoffenheim player Stefan Posch. However, Heorhiy Sudakov, who stepped up to the spot for Donetsk, was unable to convert it. Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski guessed the right corner and made the save. The game remained relatively evenly poised thereafter. In the end - despite several chances for Bologna in the second half - it remained a goalless draw.

Donetsk continue their Ukrainian league campaign against Obolon Kiev on Monday (September 23, 5 p.m.), before Shakhtar will then go for important points in the top flight for the first time at the VELTINS-Arena on October 2. The team will then face their next Italian opponents, Atalanta Bergamo, at 18:45.
