Promises biathlon at Schalke this year for the Ukrainian team a highlight to become? Juliya Dzhyma and Dmytro Pidruchnyi form this year againTeam Ukraine for the World Team Challenge at Schalke. In the first stage of the race, they placed one sensational 4th place. Although they were unable to compete for the medals in the pursuit race, they finished the event but still on a noteworthy 5th place.
The 33-year-old Juliya Dzhyma is an experienced and very successful athlete who has won numerous medals at European Championships - including five gold, three silver and one bronze - as well as several podium places in the World Cup, both individually and with the team. Dzhyma has also finished on the podium five times with the Ukrainian relay team at world championships. On February 21, 2014, she also became Olympic champion with the relay team at the Olympic Games in Sochi (RUS).
Dmytro Pidruchnyi knows the special challenge and atmosphere of the Biathlon World Team Challenge. Alongside Anastassija Merkuschyna, he took 2nd place in 2019, continuing the winning streak of the Ukrainian teams, who have been among the best at Schalke on several occasions.
The 32-year-old became sadly famous in February 2022, when he was called up to the National Guard immediately after returning from the Olympic Games in Beijing and had to do his military service due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
Pidruchnyi was able to compete as a biathlete again in the 2022/2023 season, but only took part in a few competitions. Nevertheless, he achieved an outstanding result at the World Championships in Oberhof with fifth place in the sprint and eighth place in the pursuit. His greatest success to date: he became world champion in the pursuit in Östersund in 2019. He has also won two gold and one bronze medal at the European Championships.
